Stelle oblate
Alcune stelle hanno una velocità di rotazione così elevata che la forza centrifuga le allarga all’equatore e le schiaccia ai poli. Più la rotazione è veloce, più l‘effetto "frittata” aumenta: Achernar, per citare un caso limite, ha un diametro equatoriale maggiore del 56% del diametro polare.
L’animazione seguente mostra una galleria di stelle oblate (cioè rigonfie all’equatore e schiacciate ai poli), a partire dalla brillante Altair per finire con la gigantesca e massiccia Gamma Cassiopeiae. La velocità di rotazione di tali stelle non è molto lontana dal punto di rottura, quel punto cioè in cui la forza di gravità non è più sufficiente a impedire la disgregazione dell’oggetto. Per capire la differenza di velocità con una stella “normale”, si pensi che Altair, il cui raggio equatoriale è il doppio di quello del Sole, impiega poco più di 10 ore per una rotazione completa, mentre al nostro Sole occorrono, all’equatore, oltre 25 giorni terrestri per un giro completo su se stesso.
